The actor, 50, admitted that theDancing with the Starsalum, 38, thought he was “insane” to sign up for season 2 of Fox’s boot camp-style reality competitionSpecial Forces: World’s Toughest Test.

“Sharna thought it was insane. She questioned my sanity, absolutely — which she does all the time anyway because I just am not the best at making decisions that are good for me,” he quipped to PEOPLE Tuesday at a Los Angeles press event for the show.

Still, Green doesn’t regret his decision. “I’m really genuinely happy that I experienced this,” he shared. “This is one of the things that I can look back on in life and go, the fact that we got to do this, we got to do something that unless you’re serving [in the military]…. This isn’t something that you would normally experience. It’s so cool.”

That’s not to say theBeverly Hills 90210alum didn’t have a few moments when he kicked himself for volunteering for the grueling, physically demanding reality show.

“I thought, ‘Oh, this is going to be a great test of what I’ve been through and who I am now and what I’m capable of.’ And then you get into it and you go, ‘Man, I’m in way over my head on this. I so underestimated this experience,'” he explained.

“The whole group became my rock, we became a unit, which is, I feel like within this process, that’s something that they push for,” he told PEOPLE. “They really try and unite all of us and have us all looking out for each other and working as a team, which is a very military state of mind. When you’ve got a unit, you’re only as strong as the person that’s next to you.”

Green said he feels super close with his castmates after everything they experienced together. “It’s crazy when you go through something like this. I equate it almost to a plane crash where we all have this thing in common and nobody else that wasn’t involved in this will have the same bond that we do and the same experience of this. So now we have something when we see each other,” he explained.

“She’ll end up buying him a house and stuff like that, a whole bunch of stuff he doesn’t need,” Green told PEOPLE on the red carpet at the 2023 iHeart Radio Awards. “But she’s just like, ‘Oh my God, I have a 1-year-old,’ so she’s going to go crazy.”
