“And it goes to the two extraordinary women who gave life to her,” said Salles, 68, shouting out the two women who play Pavia in the film: “Fernanda Torres and Fernanda Montenegro.”

She is the second-ever Brazilian to be nominated for Best Actress at the Oscars and followed in the footsteps of her mother, Montenegro, who was nominated for Salles' 1998 film,Central Station.

InI’m Still Here, Torres, 59, portrays a mother and activist coping with the forced disappearance of her husband during Brazil’s military dictatorship in the latter half of the 20th century. The filmis based on Marcelo Rubens Paiva’s biographical book of the same name.

Emilia Pérezstormed into this year’s Academy Awards carrying 13 total nominations, which were the most among any movie nominated this year. The French production also earned a distinction as the most-nominated non–English language film in Oscars history with its whopping baker’s dozen of nominations. In addition to its Best Picture nod, lead actressKarla Sofía Gascónand supporting actressZoe Saldañawere nominated for their performances, as was director Audiard, 72, in the Best Director category.

The film’s awards campaign came under intense scrutiny in January and February after journalists unearthed Gascón’spast controversial social media posts, leading the actress toskip other major awardsshows she was nominated atin the run-up to the Oscars. Gascón, 52, whoappearedat the Oscars ceremony, has been silent on the matter since Feb. 6, when she stated on Instagram that she would simply “let the work talk for itself” after her director Audiard criticized herinitial reactionto the controversies.
