Mário Zagallo, a four-timeWorld Cupchampion, has died at 92.
The Brazilian football icon’s officialInstagram accountannounced hisdeathon Friday, along with details about his public wake and burial.
“It is with great regret that we announce the passing of our eternal world champion Mário Jorge Lobo Zagallo,” the Instagram message said in Spanish. “A devoted father, loving grandfather, caring father-in-law, faithful friend, victorious professional and a great human being. Giant idol. A patriot who leaves us a legacy of great achievements.”
Zagallo won two World Cups as a player in 1958 and 1962. As a head coach in 1970, he earned his third World Cup victory. Twenty-four years later as an assistant coach in 1994, he snagged a fourth trophy.

Prior to his death, Zagallo shared his final Instagram post on Sept. 1.
“What a joy! After 22 days hospitalized for a urinary infection, I was discharged and went home,” he wrote to his 242,000 followers.
“I just want to thank everyone who has played a part in my recovery in any way,” he continued. “A special thank you to my doctor Dr. Marcia Ladeira and her semi-intensive nursing team! We are still stronger than ever! Thank you all for the messages and love!”
