The 2019 Academy Award nominations are in —with a few surprises!
This year’s nominees for the 91st Annual Academy Awards were announced on Tuesday morning has left some fans cheering for their favorite film or annoyed at an unexplained snub.
Here are the biggest shockers of the announcement.

Snub: Perhaps the biggest snub of the morning came when Cooper did not receive a best director nomination for his work on the latestA Star is Bornremake. He earned a Golden Globe nod for directing, although he ultimately lost out to Cuaron (Roma). Cooper, who’s garnered three Oscar nominations in previous years, did collect nods this year for best actor, as well as a best adapted screenplay this time around. Along with starring in, writing and directingA Star is Born, which also got a best picture nomination, Cooper produced the heartbreaking musical drama.

Surprise:Roma‘s Marina de Tavira has been on the awards circuit all season touting the acclaimed black and white film but hasn’t factored into the race until now. The Mexican theater and film actress was nominated for best supporting actress.
Snub:First Man‘s Claire Foy andMary Queen of Scots‘ Margot Robbie were shut out of the best supporting actress race. The two have been nominated elsewhere this season but were considered potential outliers going into the Oscar nominations.

Snub:Timothée Chalamet was expected to net his second Oscar nomination for his supporting turn inBeautiful Boyhaving been nominated for a Golden Globe and SAG Award in recent weeks. His snub no doubt came as a shock to his passionate fan base. But not to worry: the 23-year-old has a long career ahead of him.
Surprise: Willem Dafoe has been absent all awards season for his leading performance as artist Vincent Van Gogh inAt Eternity’s Gate, so his inclusion in the best actor race comes as a welcome surprise.

Snub: Emily Blunt failed to score a nomination — and she had two movies in contention! She was considered a long shot for her supporting actress work in her husband’s hit horror film,A Quiet Place. She stood a better shot at being recognized for her leading work inMary Poppins Returnsbut was overlooked in the end.

Snub:Crazy Rich Asiansdidn’t get any love from the Academy. The romantic comedy starring Constance Wu and Henry Golding broke numerous box office records after it opened in August, and went on to earn Golden Globe andSAG Awardsnominations. Star Michelle Yeoh created an exciting moment at the Golden Globes earlier this month when she showed up on the red carpet wearing the sizable emerald ring from the film. Fans and critics alike speculated thatCrazy Rich Asianscould receive a best picture nod, but the movie, and its stars’ fun energy, will be missed atthe Oscarsthis year.
Surprise: Yalitza Aparicio was considered a long shot for a best actress nomination forRoma. In the end, the Mexican newcomer beat the likes of Blunt,Destroyer‘sNicole KidmanandMary Queen of Scotsherself, Saoirse Ronan, for a spot in the competitive category.

Snub:There’s Something About Marydirector Peter Farrelly found himself inthe Oscarsrace last fall after his dramaGreen Booksurprised at the top winner of the Toronto International Film Festival. While his film received a best picture nomination, he failed to land a best director nod.
Snub: Though not typically a controversial category, the Academy noticeably left outWon’t You Be My Neighbor? from the documentary feature slot. The heartfelt Mr. Rogers doc has been picking up best documentary honors at regional awards shows since its June 2018 premiere, and went on to be recognized at the Gotham Awards and this past weekend’s PGA Awards. Mr. Rogers may get another chance for awards season glory, though, when Tom Hanks portrays the late PBS star in an upcoming biopic, titledA Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.
The 91st Annual Academy Awards airs live Sunday, February 24 on ABC.
