Cooper’s father Charles died in 2011 after a battle with lung cancer.

“It was everything. It was the biggest gift he gave me. The second biggest gift — having me, brining me into this life, and then him allowing me to be witness to his passing was equally as huge,” Cooper said. “He was cradled [in my arms] and when he took his last breath, I honestly felt like it went into me and I’ve never seen anything the same since.”

Cooper, who often looked towards girlfriend Irina Shayk in the audience throughout his talk, said that he can still picture every aspect from that day, including how it felt to cradle his father and even the texture of the clothes he was wearing during his final moments. And years later, the actor said his father still shows up in his dreams from time to time.

“I cherish them, I love when he’s in my dreams,” he said. “It’s funny, in the beginning, he was very sick in my dreams. And now in my dreams he’s healthy. He was very sick in my dreams the first couple years, and now when he comes he’s like, 50 years old.”

Cooper also reflected on becoming a dad after welcoming his 22-month-old daughter Lea De Seine with Shayk — and how much she reminds him of his dad.
