A boy has died after he was shot in a tragic hunting accident in southern Mississippi on Saturday, according to reports.

The boy handed his .22-caliber rifle to his sister while kneeling on the ground at their grandmother’s house, but stood up as she pulled the trigger, perThe Laurel Leader-Call.

The child was transported to Forrest General Hospital in critical condition, per the paper. He was then transferred to University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, where he later died.

The JCSO and Mississippi’s Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s requests for comment. The names of the siblings have not been released at this time.

Lance Chancellor, Jones County Sheriff’s Department public information officer, said the child’s organs will be donated to those in need, according to theLedger.

“Out of this horrible tragedy, some child or children somewhere around the country will receive organ donations that could be the gift of life,” Chancellor said.

The kids were with their 19-year-old step brother at the time of the incident, per the reports.

An investigation is ongoing, per the reports.
