It’s been three years since the untimely death ofBob Saget.
On Jan. 9, 2022, theFull Housestar wasfound deadat the age of 65 in his hotel room at The Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes in Florida. While it was later discovered that Saget had suffered blunt head trauma following an unwitnessed fall, the immediate news of his death came as a shock to family, friends and fans around the world.
“We are devastated to confirm that our beloved Bob passed away today,” Saget’s wifeKelly Rizzoand his family said in a statement to PEOPLE. “He was everything to us and we want you to know how much he loved his fans, performing live and bringing people from all walks of life together with laughter.”
Three years after his death, Rizzo wrote a heartfelt message onInstagram, remembering her late husband.

According to Saget’s autopsy, the Orange County Medical Examiner stated thatthe comedian had fractures to the back of his headand around his eyes at the time of his death — and had likely fallen backward and hit the back of his head.
Per the report, Saget had posterior scalp abrasions, subgaleal hemorrhage (which is blood that forms between skull and scalp), discoloration in the upper and lower eyelids due to skull fracture, subdural hematoma (which is a buildup of blood on the surface of the brain) and subarachnoid hemorrhage (which is bleeding in the space that surrounds the brain).
The autopsy also noted that “nothing was located” in Saget’s room that“allows for a definitive conclusion” to be madeon how he could have obtained his fatal head injury. According to the report, “most of the suite was carpeted” and “the headboard of the bed was lightly padded and set slightly out from the wall.”
While both were cited as “possible mechanisms of injury,” authorities also checked other pieces of furniture like marble end tables and bathroom counters,finding no traces of blood or hair. It has been speculated that Saget lost consciousness in the bathroom and fell backward onto the marble floor, hitting his head. Upon regaining consciousness, Saget is believed to have stumbled into bed, where he again lost consciousness and died.
Saget was also COVID-19 positive at the time of his death and had the prescription drug clonazepam in his system, which treats seizures, panic disorders, and anxiety. The autopsy also stated that Saget had cardiomegaly (an enlarged heart), coronary artery atherosclerosis (damage or disease in the heart’s major blood vessels) and aortic atherosclerosis (plaque build-up inside the wall of the aorta).

Saget was found unresponsive in his hotel room at The Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes. Earlier in the evening, he had performed a stand-up set and was last seen on surveillance video upon his return to the hotel.
He was recorded exiting the elevator on the hotel’s ninth floor and walking down the hallway. He entered his room at 2:17 a.m. and put a “Do Not Disturb” sign on his doorknob. According to authorities who saw the footage and spoke with PEOPLE, nothing seemed out of the ordinary and he showed no sign of distress.
Saget was set to return home later that day, but when he did not check out and his family was “unable to get a hold of him,” a member of the hotel’s security teamheaded upstairs to “check on his well-being.”When Saget did not answer the door, the employee entered the room, finding the comedian lying in bed with “no pulse.”
Deputies from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department were called just after 4 p.m and Saget was pronounced deceased on scene.

In the hours leading up to his passing, Saget crossed paths with numerous people following his stand-up performance at Ponte Vedra Concert Hall. According to Rosalie Cocci, who runs errands for talent at the theater, she heardSaget complain that he was not feeling welland was dealing with the effects of “long-term COVID” as well as hearing issues.
Although he was still under the weather, Cocci noted that Saget “didn’t miss a beat” in his performance and that his speech was not slurred at any point.
Then upon returning back to his hotel, which was a two-hour drive from the venue, Saget encountered a Ritz Carlton valet who asked to take a photo. Despite it being around 2 a.m., Saget happily posed for a selfie.
Saget also posted on social media in the hours leading up to his death. On X (formerly Twitter), Sagetwrotethat he appreciated the audience at his show and was once again “happily addicted” to performing. He alsoposted a selfieto Instagram with an extended message, writing that he was “loving every moment” of his stand-up tour.
As for Saget’s final communication with his family, a source told PEOPLE thatSaget last spoke to his wife“in the early morning hours on Sunday” after his stand-up show and “sounded really happy.” Rizzo laterconfirmed that she had texted with her husbandthat day and their “last conversation, last connection” was filled with love.
“I was just very grateful that it was all, ‘I love you so much.’ I think I said, ‘I love you dearly,’ and he said, ‘I love you endlessly,’ ” she shared in a conversation withToday’sHoda Kotb. “I said, ‘I can’t wait to see you tomorrow.’ And then, you know, it was just all very — it was just all love.”

In a statement, Saget’s family shared that they were “overwhelmed with the incredible outpouring of love from Bob’s fans” in the wake of his death, and that the support has “been a great comfort to us and for which we are eternally grateful.”
“As we continue to mourn together, we ask everyone to remember the love and laughter that Bob brought to this world, and the lessons he taught us all: to be kind to everyone, to let the people you love know you love them, and to face difficult times with hugs and laughter,” they shared.

In the wake of Saget’s death, hisFull Housecostars posted touching tributes to the late actor. Ina joint statement from the entire cast, as well as series creator Jeff Franklin, the group shared their grief following the loss of Saget.
Stamos as well as his costars Dave Coulier andLori Loughlinalso shared individual statements, all expressing that theywere devastated over the news of Saget’s death.
In his owntweet, Coulier wrote, “My heart is broken. I love you, Bob. Your forever brother, Dave.”
