InOur Son, the actors play husbands whose relationship evolves from marriage to separation to custody battle over their young son, Owen.

PEOPLE has an exclusive clip from one of the moments in the lives of Gabriel (Porter) and Nicky (Evans). As the legal battle over custody of their son intensifies, the two fathers attempt to negotiate — disagreeing over which of them 8-year-old Owen wants to live with.

“Every step of the way,” says Porter as Gabriel, “I attended to him. And now suddenly you’re ready to parent. Well, it’s too late.”

“I am notvisitingmy son for the rest of my life,” says Evans as Nicky. “I won’t give him to you.”

A synopsis for the “intimate drama” reveals, “Gabriel loves Owen more than anything; Nicky loves Gabriel more than anything. Despite appearances, Gabriel has been dissatisfied with their marriage for some time and files for divorce, leading to a custody battle that forces both of them to confront the changing reality of their love for each other and for their son.”

At its 2023 Tribeca Film Festival premiere, Evans, 44, toldPEOPLEabout stepping into his first lead film role as a queer character. “I’ve been ready to take that step for ages,” said theBeauty and the Beastactor. “I just haven’t found the right story [until now]."

Our Son, he added, was a movie he “hadn’t seen before, and it’s clearly something that we’re all going through… Divorce is as right for a gay couple as marriage, and I hadn’t really seen that.”

Porter, 54, joined Evans onstage after the Tribeca premiere in June for asurprise duet performanceof a song he’d written.

“Queer people, gay people, just got marriage equality,” the Emmy-winningPosestar toldOutat that event. “We don’t have anything that speaks to how difficult marriage is, period — gay, straight, whatever, nobody really talks about that. And this is an interracial couple, so there’s that intersection.”

He added, “What I loved about this script was that it spoke to that.”

Our Sonis in theaters Friday, then on digital Dec. 15.
