It’s not hard to recognizeLaufey’s talent.
In a new interview withThe Independent, the Grammy-winning jazz-pop singer, 25, recalled none other thanBill Murraygiving her a compliment as a teenager — and leaving her a bit “confused.”
The Icelandic-Chinese artist told the outlet Murray, 74, said she was a “powerful woman” during an interaction when she was 17 years old.
While Laufey appreciated the compliment, she said, “I remember also being confused.”
“I hadn’t put out any music then,” she added. “I was just a nerdy little classical cello student.”

Laufey may still have been studying at age 17, but she’d already become a finalist on Iceland’sGot Talentand a semi-finalist onThe Voice Icelandat the time.
Since then, she’s become a Berklee College of Music graduate and released two albums: 2022’sEverything I Know About Loveand 2023’sBewitched, which won best traditional pop vocal album at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards.

“It was so much fun creating this version, and the music video became the perfect visual representation of the track,” added Laufey. “We were so lucky to have Bill Murray and Isabella Boylston of the American Ballet featured in the video for this fun and festive story.”
